John was born with T.O.F (Tetralogy of Fallot - hole in his heart), and he had to have it repaired. These are photos of him before and after the surgery in Stoller Childrens Hospital in Edmonton Alberta, Canada. I reworked this gallery in 2008 to replacing all the photos with larger versions as I found the old ones too small.

Derek Kennedy > This sign is found on the main floor, near one of the entrances. The Stollery family are the ones that made this Children's Hospital possible.

Derek Kennedy > John was very good today, even tho he had to fast all morning and afternoon. We didn't know at the time of this photo, that we would be cancelled around 4pm. Dr. Ross was concerned about the ventilation that wasn't working which could increase John's risk of infection during the operation.

Derek Kennedy > Here he is watching one of his videos. The hotel does not provide VCR's. Grandma found a store that rented VCR's by the week, on 109th street. Exit the hotel, hang a right - walk to 109th, go right - it's across the street.

If you need a computer with internet access, you will find one just outside the hotel on the left of the entrance (as you walk out of the hotel), there is a restaurant, a barber, and a another store (next business is Earls), that other store has a computer with net access for a small fee.

Derek Kennedy > This is the entrance to the PICU. Behind the camera is where you wait for the doctor to come out to tell you how things are going (this is also where the famous 'fish tank' is). The phone on the wall on the right is used by the parents to call in to see if it's ok to come in. Also to see if your child is still in the same bed. That's grandma there washing her hands...something you do after you enter the doors, and before you touch the kids!

Derek Kennedy > I can't remember off hand if this was before or after the surger, but it's in the hotel room which is almost right across the street from the hospital.

Derek Kennedy > This is another view of a typical scene for a child to look like, when he/she is first out of the OR.

Derek Kennedy > This would be a typical scene for a parent when coming in to see your child for the first time. The 'TV' screen shows his vital signs. The machines with the red tags are IV pumps, pushing drugs (pain killers or what ever the child needs), into his vein(s). You can also see the restraints on his wrists. These are to keep him from ripping out all his lines, and tubes.

Derek Kennedy > A shot of John as he sleeps peacefully. He did a lot of that for the first little while.

Derek Kennedy > He still has the bandages on his chest incision in this photo. He also has his ventilator hooked up still. At first, the machine does all the breathing for him, but then they will slowly wean him off of the ventilator. As you can see in this photo, his colour is excellent...John usually was so pale.

Derek Kennedy > Still resting comfortably. It can be quite disheartening to see your child like this, but they assure you that the child feels no pain. Morphine is administrated at first, for pain. Then Codeine, then Tylonal for children.

Derek Kennedy > Mom sitting diligantly by her childs side, waiting for him to open his eyes. The wait can seem to take forever - when all you do is sit there, with nothing to do to pass the time but watch your child, hoping those eyes will open soon.

Derek Kennedy > A top view of John, with all the wires and tubes still hooked up to him.

Derek Kennedy > A closer view of the restraints used in the PICU, also visable is the IV line. The redness on John's skin is not blood, It's the disenfectant used in the OR.

John really hates being confined, so I found this scene harder than others

Derek Kennedy > They've started to remove some things, in this photo you can see that the ventilator has been removed. His oxygen tube is still there however. This is to help keep his blood-oxygen levels up. The goal is 95% or higher.

Derek Kennedy > Not that he was thrashing or anything, or crying, but the soother would be - well, soothing. He is still a little out of it, and is unable to keep a good hold on it.
